  • The works of scholars and Eastern Christian writings state that Christianity was introduced to India by Thomas the Apostle, who visited Muziris in Kerala in 52 CE to spread gospel amongst Kerala's Jewish settlements. It is generally agreed upon that Christianity in India is almost as old as Christianity itself and spread in India even before it spread to many predominantly Christian nations of Europe.
  • According to Indian Christian traditions, the apostle Thomas arrived in Kodungallur (also Muziris), Kerala, established the Seven Churches and evangelized in present day Kerala and Tamil Nadu. As with early Christianity in the Roman Empire, it is assumed that the initial converts were largely Jewish proselytes among the Cochin Jews who are believed to have arrived in India around 562 BC, after the destruction of the First Temple.  Many of these Jews presumably spoke Aramaic like St. Thomas, also a Jew by birth, who is credited by tradition with evangelizing India.
  • Today Christians are found all across India and in all walks of life, with major populations in parts of South India, the Konkan Coast and the North-East. Indian Christians have contributed significantly to the development of those states and are well represented in various spheres of national life in various fields of science,technology, medicine, economy, humanities, civil service, politics and business. They include former and current chief ministers, governors and chief election commissioners. Indian Christians also have the highest literacy, work participation and sex ratio figures among the various religious communities in India.

  • Indian Christians lead and outscore all other religious communities in the highest literacy quotient, education excellence, highest income levels and better treatment of their women. Despite all this, they still have a tough time in the job market like anyone else. Christians in India are proud to be the model community who despite being a tiny 2.34 % of the Indian population have still contributed disproportionately to the intelligentsia, science, economy and development of their nation.

  • Indian Christians also enjoy the healthiest sex ratio, thus narrowing the gap between the genders. Statistics by the NSS- India data for 2007-2008, also shows that Christians treat their women as equals, which fares far better than other communities in terms of education and social status particularly in a nation where female infanticide, dowry hassles and gender bias against the female child in general is predominant.

    Thomas Kailath, Emeritus Professor of Engineering at Stanford University : Considered the foremost authority on Abstract Algebra in the world.

    He received his Master's degree in 1959 and his doctorate degree in 1961, both from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). He was the first Indian-born student to receive a doctorate in electrical engineering from MIT.

    Kailath is Hitachi America Professor of Engineering, Emeritus, at Stanford University. Here, he has supervised about 80 Ph.D. theses.

    Kailath has been an Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Fellow since 1970. He is also a member of the United States National Academy of Engineering, the United States National Academy of Sciences, American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the Indian National Academy of Engineering and the Silicon Valley Engineering Hall of Fame.

    Kailath was awarded the 2007 IEEE Medal of Honor for"exceptional development of powerful algorithms in the fields of communications, computing, control and signal processing."

    He has been awarded the Padma Bhushan award in 2009 by the Government of India for his contribution to Science and Engineering. He has been awarded the Fundación BBVA "Fronteras del Conocimiento de Tecnologías de la Información y la Comunicación" award for break the miniaturization barrier of chips. Kailath received praise from Dr. Patrick Dewilde, the Director of Delft Institute of Microelectronics & Submicron Technology at Delft University in the Netherlands. Dr.Dewilde attributed some of Professor Kailath's ingenuity to the influences of his Dravidian and Christian backgrounds. He was married toSarah Kailath from 1962 until her death in 2009.
